September 30, 201312 yr Hey there, I'm building a new home server that will hold a 3-4 OS's. (Unraid, windows server, and another linux dist) in the start i will have 4 HDD and an SSD for the VM's, and i will expend up to 8 HDD. I really need your help on choosing a motherboard: I need a Motherboard that will fit to my case: Antec Nine Hundred Two http://goo.gl/pj2Pog and that will fit to XenServer (http://hcl.xensource.com , if it helps :'-[ ) (and unfortunately, i don't understand a thing on motherboards....) Do you think that i should buy a motherboard with all the SATA exits? or should i buy a PCI/E storage controller? And if not, or yes, which motherboard should i buy? Thanks in advanced. P.S I'm going to use PCI pass-through function, to give the virtual Unraid system the HDD.
October 1, 201312 yr I'd recommend getting a m1015 controller card to pass through and make sure your CPU and motherboard both vt-d (for intel) or the amd equivalent. Also get a motherboard with plenty of pcie slots for adding in additional network card etc... So you can assign separate NICs to vm's if want. Also check max ram capacity as well...

I'm looking into M1015, but I'm clueless about SAS. It appears it has just two mini-SAS. How do you connect from that to SATA? Is there some sort of "fan-out" cable, or do you need more electronics.

SFF-8087 to Sata forward break out cables are what you want when going from M1015 to drives directly. I posted a link to one in a reply to another of your posts elsewhere.
November 4, 201312 yr Thanks Bob! I googled those and they seem to be 4-way. Does this mean the max you can get is 8 drives with 2 mini SAS ports and splitter cables (enough for me with ports on MB too, just curious)? If so, how would you get to the specified max of 32?

Yes it is 4 drives per mini SAS port. Look for answer in other post as well. SAS Expander or different card with more mini SAS ports.
