Also: where is the button I can click to restart or shut down the server from the web control panel?  Should I restart the server?

What error message are you receiving when you try to write? Attach the entire log. Zip if needed.

In Mac, as soon as I tried to write to the drive, Finder would lock up and I'd have to wait a long time for an unexpected error message or I would hard reboot my system.

I ended up shutting down the server.  After 90 minutes, I decided it was stuck shutting down so I hard powered it off.  When it came back online, it began a parity check and seems to be fine now.  Maybe it just needed to be rebooted.
