ESXi datastore crashed, unRAID on it, what to do now?

Featured Replies

hi

i was using version 5 rc8a

and this is my build

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=21470.0

i followed Atlas's guide for running unRAID as a virtual machine on ESXi.  Now, it seems that the SSD drive i was using for the datastore crashed.  ESXi takes time to load, but can't see that datastore drive.

What to do now?

Replace the datastore/ESXi drive and start again.  All the critical data is on your USB stick anyway.

Recovery of the datastore might be possible, but you're better off asking over at the VMware forums.  If unRAID was the only thing on your datastore, then don't worry about it.. just replace the drive and start again.

I'd get it back up and running again, then take the opportunity to upgrade to the full released v5 using the .vmdk in my signature below.

Hi

When i first built my system, i used this method for the USB

Since i used the method mentioned in the above URL, what do i do? I replace the SSD and repeat the same method?

oh, and i believe that i need to remove all the data drives when adding the new SSD datastore? I recall i read something on Johnm's Atlas build that when adding a datastore, ESXi will erase all drives.

is that right?

Check your unRAID USB stick first.  If there's nothing wrong with it, you're good to go.  There's no need to follow Johnm's post, you can use one of the .vmdk's in my signature below and save yourself a stack of time.

What I would do:

- Back up your unRAID flash drive (you do this anyway right? :) )

- Replace the (seemingly) faulty SSD, or troubleshoot cable/power etc to double check it is the disk that is failing.

- Boot up into ESXi and create a new datastore on the new drive.  You can detach the storage drives when you do the reinstall if you want.. that will avoid accidentally selecting the wrong drive.  I've never bothered, and never had ESXi wipe all my drives, but 5 seconds of pulling SATA cables out is good peace of mind I suppose.

- Use one of my .vmdk's in my sig, and the instructions there, and update your unRAID USB stick to the same version (make sure you follow any steps in the wiki for upgrading from rc8a to whatever you pick.)  I wouldn't bother with plop, it's slow and needlessly complex imho.

Once you've done all this, and set the appropriate cards to pass through etc, you should be back up and running... this is all assuming that there is no issue with your unRAID USB stick.

Hi, what i will do is first get unRAID up and running with the same version.

I did the same method i showed (took winimage) of the USB.  I also took manual backup (copying of all content of the USB).  I will create a VM and mount the vmdk and make sure unRAID is working.

Once all is working, i will do what you suggested, using your vmdk.

where can i find instructions on upgrading unRAID from 5rc8a to 5 final?

From what you are saying, i need to upgrade my USB unRAID from 5rc8a to 5 final, and then use your vmdk and attach it to the VM as a virtual disk. right?
