Network Error Transfering large file from Vista and XP to UnRaid

Featured Replies

I need some help...

My config is:

Motherboard: Abit AB9 Pro, 9 SATA, 2 gigabit ethernet ports. new cat6 cables and switch

CPU: E4300 1.8GHz

Ram: Crucial Balistix 2 X 1024MB

Video: ATI All In Wonder PCI  from about 2001

Drives to Date: 1 X WD 1TB (parity) ; 4 X WD 750 GB

Case: Antec ATX Full Tower

Flash: Lexar FireFly JumpDrive 2GB

Power Supply. Corsair 620HX

The system has been mostly stable since I fired it up in October...Lately I've been actively moving data from several networked PCs and USB Drives from XP and Vista. I've started to notice several errors writing to Unraid from both OS'es. Vista Reports a Network error after about 30% of a 48 GB file transfer. The same happens transferring files from a USB drive attached to a XP machine to UnRaid. The network has been solid and I've been able stream bluray movies to my HTPC in the past from the server. The errors has gotten so bad that I cannot successfully tranfer a 13GB file/folder without an error.

Are there some basic config I should have run to optimize UnRaid? If so, where can i find them?

SysLog Attached,

Please advise

That is only the last few pages of the syslog, see my sig for the Troubleshooting link, for the correct way to capture the syslog.

However, just from this part of the syslog, I can tell that there does not appear to be anything seriously wrong with your system, only a few hiccups, not serious.  You booted it on October 18, and it has run more or less OK since then, up to the present.  On December 21st at 12:36pm, the network connection went down for about 25 seconds, but was restored, without any further issues.  There is no indication of a fault in your unRAID server that caused the network drop, so it looks more like a router reboot.  If this dropout at 12:36pm happened at the same time the transfer aborted, then that would explain why the transfer failed, but not why the network went down.  And that is the ONLY drop recorded.

It looks to me as if the problem must be on your other machines, or the router.  I had a machine do something similar for awhile, and finally discovered that the combination of uTorrent and my D-Link DI-624 router would, for unknown reasons, reset every 30 minutes, losing network for about 30 seconds, and renew the lease, which causes a change in my IP, which destroys any VNC session I had.  Really really aggravating.  I stopped using uTorrent, and my IP did not change for months.

My problem may not be at all relevant to what is happening with your system.  Try checking the router logs, and the Event logs on your Windows machines.  Is the problem only between unRAID and any other machine?  What about between the XP and Vista machines?

Thanks for replying...

I did notice something strange in my dhcp client list...UnRaid was not listed? I did have to hard reset my router, maybe it did not re-assign or recognize the server. I'm re-attaching my syslog and restarting unraid..

I'll also try to transfer the same file from a vista box to a XP box to check the network. Does it help to give a static IP address to UnRaid?

Much better syslog.  Nothing more I can conclude.  It is using DHCP.

Does it help to give a static IP address to UnRaid?

Either way, doesn't make much difference.  It is more convenient for many unRAID users to set a static IP.  You always know what it is that way.
