December 27, 200817 yr I am running the latest 4.5 beta release and it always gives me this error: Unpacking initramfs...<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: invalid compressed format (err=1) I tried recopying everything, running a memory test, rebooting multiple times and using different usb ports. I also tried booting the flash drive on another computer and it ran without a hitch. Nothing works. Any suggestions?

(The memory test you ran might not have caught it) Did you set the memory voltage on the motherboard to match the memory you purchased? Same question for memory timing? Is it set to match the needs of the memory you purchased? Do you have more than one RAM strip? if so, try using just one, or just the other, or switching their positions in the sockets. Joe L.
December 28, 200817 yr Author Update: I also get this error sometimes: Unpacking initramfs...<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: junk in compressed archive

I had unraid running earlier today, all I did was shut it down, put the usb stick in my pc and copy the new stuff to it according to the instructions. (I wanted the new nfs feature). I put it back in my server pc and it didn't work.

(I know you said you were able to boot it in another PC, but not sure what else to suggest you try.) Try a different USB port on the server perhaps? Joe L
December 28, 200817 yr Author Yes, I safely ejected the drive. I think the mobo is bad. Got it from a university for cheap and it has been working fine for the past few months, probably decided to give up the ghost now. The cpu is read at 2 ghz and ram at 512. Both are correct. It pauses at the post screen for awile then goes to a blinking line. When I press F2 to enter setup it says "entering setup" but then still goes to the blinking line after a pause.
December 28, 200817 yr Author Yea, I did before it quit allowing me to choose it from the menu and nothing turned up.
December 28, 200817 yr If you can run with only 1 stick of RAM, try each one alone. Boot into the BIOS, and reset to failsafe/factory defaults.
December 28, 200817 yr Author That's the thing, I've tried that. I used the hardware jumper to reset to the defaults because I was not able to even boot into the bios. Nothing changed. I only ever had one stick of ram in it anyway.
December 28, 200817 yr Try swapping the PSU, just to test a different one on that mobo. If that fails, it looks like a bad mobo. If you can try a different RAM stick, I'd do it, just to eliminate the RAM once and for all.
December 28, 200817 yr Author I tried it in 3 different computers 2 with the same mobo and different ram/cpus and 1 with different mobo and different cpu/ram. It only booted on the one with the different mobo, cpu and ram. I think the new version has issues with the mobo. Thanks for your help everyone!
