November 26, 201312 yr http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00829THLE STCA4000100 external unit that most likely has the ST4000DM000 5900rpm drive in it... Free shipping. Regards, Peter Now up to $149.99...
November 26, 201312 yr This is an excellent deal. The drive inside is the latest 5900 Rpm model, which would be good in an unraid box.
November 26, 201312 yr How many people rip these things out and uses them as regular drives knowing that the warranty is now void?
November 26, 201312 yr Quite a few people, since Seagate has honored the warranty on many of them anyway. Many people on AVS have done this and had no issues returning a drive under warranty, and others get an OEM package message. You can also open these drives without destroying the enclosure (Unlike some others) but it takes longer.
November 26, 201312 yr You can get the serial number of the drive without opening the enclosure and then check it's warranty coverage through Seagate. I have 3 of the 3TB 7200 RPM drives and 1 4TB 7200 RPM and all those returned a warranty date from Seagate for the serial number. However, I have quite a few of these newer 4TB 5900 RPM drives and all of those returned this message: The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.
November 26, 201312 yr Author I run 3 pre clears on them while still in the original casings. If they pass, I rip them out and install them into severs. If they fail, they get exchanged. Regards, Peter
November 26, 201312 yr odd. I am still seeing the low price on the mobile version of the webpage, but it won't let me add to my cart.
