Upgrading Hardware - question

Recommended Posts

I would be grateful if someone could verify that my planned upgrade procedure is correct, before I do something I'll regret...

I'm about to upgrade my unRAID hardware. My server has been running almost continually since 2008, and I think it deserves some TLC. So, I will be moving 13 drives to a shiny new 16 bay xcase rackmount case. I'm also taking the opportunity to upgrade the cpu to an 8 core AMD 8320, which will be running my Plex server. I am also going to add a 64GB SSD cache drive.

My plan is to note the position of all the drives in the array before removing them. Once the new server hardware is all set up, I intend to plug in the USB drive and boot up the server. Then I'll just re-assign the drives in the unRAID gui in same order they were in on the old hardware. Is this the correct procedure? Will the USB drive just work in the new environment? Thanks in advance.

You should be fine. If you're on unRAID 5.0 then it should recognize the drives on the new hardware and boot as if nothing happened. If yo 're on 4.7 then you'd need to re-assign the drives. In either case do a print screen of the main web page showing the drive assignments just in case.

Be sure to identify your CACHE and PARITY drives and reassign them correctly.

As lionelhutz points out, the data drives will sort themselves out, and their drive assignments is automatic.

But in the new system, you don't want to mis-identify a data drive as parity!  :o
