January 7, 201412 yr We're building a house, and I'm wiring a boat load of cat6 drops everywhere. I'm looking at running cat6 to where i might put a security camera down the road and pull power through POE. My question is has anyone tried to use their uNRaid as a DVR server? Looking at something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007FGH7DK/ref=asc_df_B007FGH7DK2926985?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=cnet-ce-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B007FGH7DK which says it can record to a SAMBA share. Anyone tried this in practice? Assuming I have gigabit on my Lan do you think writting to the server will keep up with the camera stream? I would get a dropcam but i have all this wonderful storage on my lan so it seems like a shame to pay a fee and send the bits to god knows where.... Thanks, Chris
January 7, 201412 yr I do not have Cat6 in my house. and my current server is nothing special. but I did direct transcoding to an unraid share via network and it was ok. I do not think camera stream is faster than direct video transcode.
January 7, 201412 yr I do not currently have cameras but am looking to install some and had the same idea as you. The server should easily be able to keep up with the camera stream. Whether or not it will all work in practice is another story, but the write speed of the server won't be an issue. I look forward to your results.
January 7, 201412 yr It should be no problem. I am not using my unRAID for a camera, but I am using it for DVR for Over the Air Recording, all the time. This would be HDTV using this device: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815345017 Works like a charm. I figure I could have ten streams before anything would show a slow-down. bkasten
January 9, 201412 yr I currently use this camera: http://www.ipcamprice.com/wansview-hd-indoor-wireless-security-camera-p-287.html Support direct recording with SD card, no need for DVR or other devices.
January 9, 201412 yr I have a Trendnet camera and I used to have it setup to record stills to the server. It is an older model and used FTP but it still worked fine and was fairly easy to setup. Samba should be even easier. I hope they got better though. I found the motion detection rather useless. It seemed that once I set it sensitive enough that it would pick up a person moving in front then it would start constantly recording pictures without anything in the frame. Also, if you expect to put an indoor camera in a window pointing outside then don't expect the performance to be too great. Turn off the IR because it will just glare off the window. Sun glare on the window will also cause washout or loss of picture. Being close to the glass itself can also degrade the image. I tried it with a few cameras and it just doesn't work vey well. Unfortunately, good outdoor cameras are pricy. Finally, expect the IR on the camera to be next to useless. If you need night vision then you'll need some extra IR lights or a decent level of real lights for the camera to have a good recording.
