January 12, 201412 yr Can I run unRAID on one of the embedded AMD APUs? I'm thinking this model in particular: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157228 It comes with 4 sata ports and has a pcie x16 slot that I can put a SATA card into later for more drives. My main concern is compatibility. I've read the power draw is very low on this APU which is what drew my attention. Also, do we know what can't unRAID run on?
January 12, 201412 yr Yes, UnRAID runs fine on a E-350. But low-power CPU's like that aren't a good choice if you plan on running add-ons (like Plex), which require more CPU "horsepower".
January 12, 201412 yr huh...$70 for the MOBO and Processor...that's a great deal. I wish this had been around when I built my system. I pre-transcode media on my Mac, and then copy the finished files to unRAID anyway.... It could also be the basis for a backup NAS that does nothing but sync to my main unRAID box. If someone's built one using this, I'd like to hear how it works...
January 12, 201412 yr Search the forums. I know I've seen a couple builds here using either the AMD APU's or Intel Atoms. They work great as NAS only devices with no plugins. If I'm not mistaken, one of garycase's servers is an Atom.
January 12, 201412 yr Yes, my PC-Q25B system is an Atom ... runs great, only uses 20w on idle (and a max of 45w even during parity checks) ... and has all the power it needs as a NAS. I do NOT run any CPU-intensive add-ons (Plex, etc.) on it -- it's purely a NAS. I have not built an E-350 based setup; but I've seen a few posts where folks have used them; and the PassMark score for an E-350 is actually a tad higher than for my Atom (762 vs. 690), so I'm confident it's got plenty of "horsepower".
