Vortexbox or MakeMKV in conjunction with unRAID - is this possible?

Featured Replies

I currently run a Vortexbox and have had issues with storage so I have just bought the hardware for a NAS. I am curious, has anyone has successfully integrated Vortexbox or MakeMKV with unRAID?

The best my research has shown me so far is that it is not possible. I will either have to run a separate Vortexbox and mod it to write directly to unRAID or I will possibly just run two motherboards in my case (Lian-Li PC343B) still having to mod it to write directly to unRAID, but it will reduce one computer case currently used.

Does anyone have any suggestions or direction they can point me to successfully run an auto ripper like Vortexbox or MakeMKV within unRAID?

How are your Linux skills?

Were you planning on running CLI or do you need a GUI?

My linux skills are nil. I know just enough to follow online guides and to fumble through the tasks at hand.

I honestly don't need to run a GUI if its just a drop and rip (+ grab metadata) like Vortexbox. I rarely access its GUI unless I need to update. It was helpful using the GUI to enter MakeMKV's key that I purchased though, however Im sure I could just as easily enter it in the file if I knew where that was.

Give me a few days and I will look into creating a makemkv package. I believe I saw a plugin that was in development so it probably has a link to one you can download / install / test.

EDIT: Found it... MakeMKV Slackware Package - Dev Help

Wow, thank you so much and so quick! Being completely new (not to mention ignorant) to all of Linux. Would you please explain the slackware aspect of this? I am assuming that this is not like unRAIDs plugins. Does something like this need to be run in VM? I have just begun researching VM (already wishing I would have bought an i-series processor). I am just unclear on how this is ran or installed.

Could you describe your workflow? I'm wondering if unraid as currently released will work at all, since it doesn't have optical drive support. Perhaps in a couple weeks the situation may be different, as there are many things in the works for unraid.

Currently as it stands I have a Vortexbox w/ a 2TB drive that automatically rips and adds metadata to CD's and Blu-Ray's and converts the BR rips to MKV. My unRAID is still going through preclean on my first 3tb drive (going on 50hrs, 3x pass, and 1x 3tb, 2x 2tb, 1x 1tb drives to go) so I imagine I will be manually copying over the files from the Vortexbox to the unRAID server until I can get the Vortexbox to write directly to the unRAID server.

My desire is to have all of the ripping handled directly by the unRAID server itself and eliminate the extra Vortexbox computer, also gaining me another 2tb drive (from the Vortexbox). I would like to make the process as seamless and hands off as possible.
