Newbie moving to unRaid, disc setup and moving data

Featured Replies

Hello !

I am a newbie about to move into unRaid.

I currently have 1 TB disc of data that I need to move into unRadid.

Funds does not let me build a complete unRaid setup, I need to keep a few of my old HD's for a while.

My UnRaid setup will have a 3 TB HD at delivery.

My game plan is to end up with a unRaid system with my new 3 TB HD as parity disc and the old 1 TB data, then I can add data HD's later on.

My problem is getting there...

Does this sound about right ?

Install 3 TB HD to unRaid as unprotected data.

Move data from 1 TB to 3 TB disc, 1 TB still attached to current XP install using Teracopy.

Add 1 TB disc to unRaid as unproteced data, ie pre-clear and format it.

Here comes my question, can I copy data from 3 TB HD to 1 TB HD "within" unRaid ?

Once the 1 TB HD has all data, add the 3 TB HD as parity and hence have redundancy.

Can this be done a better/faster/more secure way ?

That sounds like it should work.  Its unclear what your new unRAID setup is, but if you don't want to move the physical drives from one box to another, this should work if you're careful and methodical.

unRAID includes a program called, 'Midnight Commander.'  Google 'Midnight Commander tutorials' for info.  Here are two that I like:

When you have both the 1TB and the 3TB drives in the unRAID box, type MC from the keyboard and monitor attached to unRAID

(or TELNET into the unRAID box from your PC and type MC).  With MC running, (check the tutorials for a picture), you find the first drive in one half of the MC window, and the other drive in the other half of the window. You 'select' all the files on the 3TB drive and hit the 'copy' f-key.

YOU'LL HAVE NO BACKUP COPY AT SEVERAL CRITICAL POINTS ALONG THE WAY.

If you're not positive about how to proceed...write down your steps as you go along, and if you are in doubt at all, stop, and post to the forums.

Also, I could have this wrong, and one of the smart guys on the forum will chime in and correct us both. So before you run off and proceed, wait a day.  ;)

Thanks for your reply.

Just by reading about MC it makes my think back to the Norton Commander days in DOS (and I guess its a clone..)

I am still waiting for the HW to show up, I will build this on the HP N54L and have Exsi running and virtualize the unRaid installation, so ther will be time for others to jump in.

It's the "juggeling" around with HD's and still not loose data that I am worried about.

I think your priorities are a little backward. Getting your data backed up is more important than moving to a raid system. Once you have a good backup plan in place, then juggling data won't be nearly as stressful. Raid by itself is NOT a backup.

True, I will backup the most importent bits of data but I would ofcourse like to get it right (no restore needed) in the first place, hence my question.
