USB Card Reader & Upgrade to 5.0

Featured Replies

I am currently running unRAID 4.7 Pro and have started getting the USB error -71 message.  I will assume my current USB flash drive is going bad.  My motherboard is a SuperMicro X7SBE.

I would like to purchase a USB card reader as a replacement and is looking at the Kingston MobileLite G3 or Transcend Information USB 3.0.

I plan on ordering from Amazon and so hopefully it is a genuine product so it won't be blacklisted by LimeTech.  Is there a preference based on quality and compability as to which one I should get?

I am making this a separate topic thread from existing card reader threads so that I can follow up with questions, if any, because I will use this opportunity to upgrade to unRAID 5.0 RC too.

Edit:

Just saw the official release is now 5.05.  The problem with unRAID is that it runs for a long period of time until there is a hardware failure, then you have to refresh your memory about how to do things.  Oh well, it must be time to upgrade.

The Kingston G3 is that you are considering is the exact same one that I ordered from Amazon on Jan 23rd of this year.  Apparently, it has a 'good' GUID number as I registered it with LimeTech. (There are a lot of other G3's in use with unRAID and I assume that many of those are also registered.)  I am using it in my test bed and it works fine IF I use a microSD  card.  It will NOT work in my motherboard if I use a standard SD card!!!!

I just purchased the Transcend Information USB 3.0 because it is less expensive.  I tried searching the forum and did not find anyone mentioning that they have successfully used it for unRAID.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will have a good GUID number.

I plan to use it with a Transcend microSD card.  I figured all my Transcend SD cards have worked well in my camera and so it should last long for unRAID use.  The one aspect of the Transcend reader that I read on the Amazon reviews is that you may only use one of the SD or microSD card slot at a time and not both.  I figured this would eliminate any boot problems when both slot are available to the BIOS like that of the Kingston MobileLite G3.  My SuperMicro X7SBE motherboard may now be considered outdated and so I just want the USB reader to be as simple as possible for the BIOS.

Since I am planning to upgrade from 4.7 to 5.05 as part of replacing my failing USB flash drive, is there any instructions on how to retain my current array configuration?  In other words, what do I need to copy over to the new flash drive?

I have read both the readme.txt for 5.05 and the Wiki instructions for upgrading from 4.7, but they do not address the scenario of upgrading from 4.7 to 5.05 onto a new flash drive.

I plan to install the free version of 5.05 onto the flash drive so that I can get the GUID for a new license key.  Then I would just like to move the necessary files over from my old failing flash drive so that my current array configuration is not lost.

USB Card Reader

Can I ask if you were successful with the Transcend Information USB 3.0 Card Reader (TS-RDF5K) with Unraid. Ie ( Not black listed)

Did you end up using a Micro SD card for your Unraid OS?

Thanks,

Paul

I have not received the Transcend USB card reader yet, but I will post an update once I know the answer.

Is there a way to determine if a flash GUID is not going to be black listed?  I have the GUID to my new Transcend USB card reader and the last 12 digits are not all zeroes, but then they are mostly zeroes except for a few digits.

Is there a way to determine if a flash GUID is not going to be black listed?  I have the GUID to my new Transcend USB card reader and the last 12 digits are not all zeroes, but then they are mostly zeroes except for a few digits.

The two that I have access to the GUID string quickly have a format like this:

      XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-NNNNNNNNNNNN

Where the X's appear to be Hexadecimal  numbers and the N's appear to be decimal.  Both of the decimal numbers are all fairly low--- less than 20,000.  I suspect that the N's are actually the serial number of that particular device in the production run with the X's being the identifier of the manufacturer and the identifier of the particular product model/production run.

I believe most of the counterfeit ones have consecutive serial numbers like 1234567890

I also believe that if you should happen to submit a GUID for a black listed device, Tom will tell you so and you can get purchase another device and try again.  The other way that a device becomes blacklisted is if someone submits a GUID for a device which is identical to one that he already has registered as valid.  But I would think that the first one registered would still be valid...

According to Tom, the GUID of the Transcend Information USB 3.0 card reader I submitted is unique and he issued a replacement license key.  However, he warned me that it could still be blacklisted later.  I was the second person to submit a GUID for the Transcend Information USB 3.0 reader and so far, both GUIDs have been unique.

I am just a little worried about being blacklisted in the future because the GUID for the Transcend Information USB 3.0 is not that cryptic beign all decimals (no Hexadecimal) and the serial number part is very low (mostly zeroes).  So in conclusion, I was able to get a valid GUID for the Transcend Information USB 3.0 card reader for now.  Just a caution that your mileage may vary.  Another caveat regarding about booting from the card reader is that the boot/load time is significantly slower than from a regular USB flash drive.

I have also ordered a Sandisk Cruzer Fit 4GB USB flash drive since there is currently a $30 offer for a second key.  It is good to have a backup to to testing.
