[SOLVED] Xen - domain shutdown but not dying?

Featured Replies

So it seems like I can't get a domain to fully close out when using "xl shutdown [dom-id]"  shutting down from xfce GUI. When I bring up a list what I see is

root@Tower:/mnt/appdisk/Xen/stacklet# xl list
Name                                        ID   Mem VCPUs      State   Time(s)
Domain-0                                     0  2048     4     r-----     833.2
ubuntu.13-10                                 9  1024     1     ---s--     358.2

According to xl man pages:

The guest OS has shut down (SCHEDOP_shutdown has been called) but the domain is not dying yet.

That makes it impossible for me to start the VM again until I issue "xl destroy [dom-id]

Any thoughts?  Before anyone says it I had this problem before I upgraded to 13.10.

EDIT: Technically I don't know if this is SOLVED, but I was trying to shutdown from the xfce gui.  If I instead kill the VNC session and then issue xl shutdown [dom-id] directly from the host console the entire domU dies as it should.

I've never had success with shutdown.

Yeah I'm not sure how well it is supposed to work when shutting down from within the VM OS, but it sure wasn't working for me.  Then again, i seemed to have no ill effects from doing it and then manually destroying the hung VM.  In either case I have to go into xl to fully and cleanly shutdown the VM so I guess it is a wash.

Right, I've tested the command and it works so long as the VM is running and isn't hung.

You must run the command from the console of the HOST not the VM.
