January 13, 200917 yr Hey guys....i finally have my unraid server up and running and working fine! heres my setup Latest Unraid 2 x 500GB SATA disks for DATA 1 x IDE 500GB disk for PARITY I have created one share named "movies" with the right split level for my collection...all is working perfectly. ....I have another disk (on another machine) with alot of important data/applications on it, this is currently sitting at around ~80GB, i have a spare 200gb disk i could place in my Unraid box, solely for everything else thats not Media related.....what i was wondering is if its possible to have one disk allocated to unraid that i can transfer files accross to, and not have to worry about unraid splitting the data onto another disk? Would this work??.... Add a new disk to my Unraid box Assign accordingly Created a new share - something like "important_data" .... and somehow set it up so whatever i transfer accross to this share stays only on the disk i just added. start moving data accross to this new share...making sure it doesnt split accross (definitely dont want high water aswell). Basically i have ~ 80gb of data right now....but a 200gb disk would be sufficient for future growth most definitely! ........just to complicate things further....lets say i do fill that 200gb in 5years time....would i be able to replace that hdd with a bigger one, and have parity move all the data onto a bigger disk?
January 13, 200917 yr yes (to all) you can even "talk" to this disk by refering to it by the disk number, not a user share (//tower/disk3)
January 13, 200917 yr Author Thanks!....how would i setup my share so it doesnt split, or move between disks?
January 13, 200917 yr if you want to use a share then define it in "shares" and only use the appropriate disk in "include disks" - you don't need to set anything else (allocation and split are ignored for single disks - make no sense) but still in this case I'd use the disk number directly (it is faster not to "pass through" user shares when not necessary)
January 13, 200917 yr Author No worries - ill go direct to disk then.....thanks for the tip!! Is there anyway to rename disks?....so i dont have to go \\tower\disk1, but instead \\tower\data....which goes to same place. That would be nice:) I guess ill need to add the disk to the exclusion range on my main share then?.....or else my movie share will start to copy data to the disk i dont won't it to....is this correct?
January 13, 200917 yr no there is no way (and in fact I like that way because it leads to MUCH less confusion) - in that case you need to use the user shares yes you either add disk3 in the exclusion list, or opposite, add disk1 and disk2 in the inclusion list (in that case if you add a disk4 later, the original user share will not expand to it)
January 14, 200917 yr Author Thanks, so for my Movie share, i should add disk 3 to exclusion list....that way if i add another disk as part of my Movie share array i don't have to keep manually adding it to the Inclusion list all the time....is this a more practical way? Thanks so much for your help! ....ONE LAST QUESTION: How do i backup my Unraid server contents, like in the case of my Flash disk failing...i dont have a parity for my flash disk )......i have the free version....but will be purchasing UNRAID today.
January 14, 200917 yr Author What format do i use for included/excluded disks area?......do i use "disk1", "disk 1"....or "1"....or the full device name of the disk inc serial no. etc?

I use disk1, disk2 and so on, but i believe there should be a post around from Tom describing all the ways that you can represent them. You might want to try a forum search. Matt
