February 16, 201412 yr I have been using Unraid for my main home server for a few years. I am still using release 4.5.4. I built the server 3 years ago with a single core 2.2 celeron CPU and 2 gigs of Ram. I have 10 disks plus parity 20 TB of storage. I do not use any plugins. Keeping it simple. I have a i7 2700k over clocked with 12 gigs of memory as my main computer that I run a plex server program. All my movie files are stored on the unraid and stream through this computer. My question is I have several friends that simultaneously stream movies from me. So far I have seen up to 5 at a time watch my movies over the internet. Seems to work well but I want to make sure I have the Unraid server to be tuned as good as it can be for this purpose. Any suggestions?
February 16, 201412 yr Since you have another machine doing the transcoding, all unRAID has to do is serve the files to the i7 machine as quickly as it can. You may want to make sure the unRAID server has enough RAM, and perhaps run Tunables Tester. Frankly, though, as long as the unRAID server is on a gigbait connection (as it the i7 transcoding machine), you should be fine.

February 16, 201412 yr Author Thanks Guys. That's good news. I recently updated my Uverse connection to the highest level they just came out with. Uverse where I am at had a 25MB up and 3 down only. Now there new level teams to Uverse circuits giving me 50 down and 6 up. This required a new modem, an unexpected benefit I seeing is my write speeds to the tower have almost doubled. I use to have a dismal 12 MB/sec now its usually in the 20 MB/sec range. Any thoughts on this? And should I be doing something different to get higher write speeds? With this limited information I have given you how many people do you think can stream from plex at once. 5 is the highest I have seen on the plex manager screen but I am not sure if they had any issues while watching. A few said they have had disconnections at times but it seems to always be the people who have questionable connections at their side. Thanks for any insight.
February 16, 201412 yr If you're using their modem as a router it may be 100Mbps. You could put a gigabit switch in your network to connect the wired stuff together.
February 16, 201412 yr Author Any recommendations on the switch? I currently use a Netgear 8 port switchhttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-8-port-gigabit-ethernet-switch/7451964.p?id=1125238548396&skuId=7451964 but saw no improvement and maybe a little less between my workhorse computer and the tower.
February 16, 201412 yr Nice switch. Two devices connected directly to that switch should be maxing out the network connection speed. If any device has to go through the router to reach another device, both sides will be slower.
