March 12, 201412 yr I'm running a 6 drive (about 7TB) unRAID box under 4.6 that's been flawless. I've recently acquired a Synology DS412+ which I intend to use as a private Dropbox server etc., but also want to use it for migration of my data. I'm somewhat paranoid about such things, so my idea is to copy all data from the current setup to the Synology box, pull the drives from the unRAID box replacing them with 3 or 4 TB drives, and then copy the data back, so that I have a spare copy or two at all times. Any ideas on how to do the copy quickly? Currently using FreeFileSync on a Mac Mini with all three devices on the same gigabit switch, but it's apparent that this will be an arduous task. Ideas? I suspect I need to do something with rSync, but I've never set that up before. Thanks in advance! waldemar
March 12, 201412 yr It should be possible to mount a network share (unRAID) on the Synology. They have plenty of apps, maybe you don't even need to work with the console? Make sure you have a GB LAN. Of course you could also use one of your new 3 or 4 TB drives as an intermediate. Make sure you use SATA or eSATA.
March 12, 201412 yr Author Thank you, Fireball - that helped a lot. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. For others, here's what you do: 1. Open File Station on the Synology box (I'm running DSM 5.0). 2. Under the Tools tab, select Mount Remote Folder. 3. Type in the address of your unRAID box (\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) 4. Supply needed credentials and decide where you like to map this to. 5. Start copying.
