Another U-NAS 800 Build

Featured Replies

I'm working on a U-NAS 800 build based on several I've seen on these forums. Looking to run unraid + sabnzbd + couchpotato + nzbdrone + plex w/ 1 client. Here's what I've got so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/trimalchio/saved/4icY

I was hoping to get some feedback? I'm particularly wondering about the SATA controller card. I noticed in PhreshJive's build he uses a SAS card but I'm unclear on the difference. Can someone explain?

Thanks!!

SAS cards can be used with both SAS and SATA drives. SATA cards can only be used with SATA drives. SAS cards mostly have SFF-8087 ports which each connect to four drives--either through a backplane or breakout cable. SATA-only cards will just have a bunch of SATA ports.

I prefer the SAS cards that use the SFF-8087 connectors, because they are neater especially if you have an SAS backplane in your case.

Speaking of, I would not trust my data to that cheapo Marvell card. The IBM M1015 (rebadged LSI) is well loved by unRAID users everywhere and very reliable. You can find them on eBay for $80-100, sometimes cheaper. They can also support up to 8 drives (or more with port expanders), if you ever expand out of that case.

Thanks for the response! My case did indeed have a SAS backplane, so I ended up going with the Supermicro SAS2LP-MV8. Seems to be working well so far.
