May 4, 201412 yr So was watching a show off unraid on the tv. Noticed over the past few nights, past few episodes have been playing funky. Like freezing video almost? So I figured something was up, logged into unraid... noticed Red Ball on that drive That drive had something like 230482390480239 write and 130498109283019 reads or whatever So I see nothing in the log, that looked funny other than drive 5 removed etc.. Shut down the server.. Go to check out the server. Drive 5's power connector seems to have caught on fire lol Few questions.. 1. How was I still able to watch he show? I also noticed that each drive was reading at the same time, as I was reading the show I thought parity had to be rebuild? 2. How do I diagnose what caused the spark/malfunction.. this was a 4pin molex to sata power connector.. The 4 pin side was good, sata side not so good lol 3. Can I still use the drive? clean the contacts with some alcohol? Is't worth a shot? Thanks!!

I also noticed that each drive was reading at the same time, as I was reading the show I thought parity had to be rebuild? unRAID was simulating the failed drive by reading all the remaining drives including parity and reconstructing on the fly what would have been on disk5. When I first was experimenting with my older IDE based unRAID array, I was able to stream 4 different ISO images of DVDs to players on my LAN that were all being re-constructed from a disk I had unplugged. (somewhat similar to your situation, but without the sparks/melted connectors. They all played just fine, even though the disk they were on was missing. ) At this point, if another drive were to fail, you would lose data. 2. How do I diagnose what caused the spark/malfunction.. this was a 4pin molex to sata power connector.. The 4 pin side was good, sata side not so good lol Probably a loose/poor connection, which heated up. 3. Can I still use the drive? clean the contacts with some alcohol? Is't worth a shot? It is worth a shot... the drive might be perfectly fine. Remember though, "writes" to it failed, so it must be re-constructed. Once you get it physically connected with a good power cable, unRAID will prompt you that it will reconstruct the drive from parity and the other drives. You should let it. Thanks!! You are welcome.
