May 21, 201412 yr My server has been running fine for 2 years, but now the situation is very bad. A couple of days ago the parity disk died. I replaced it today with a 4 TB one. After starting the server I saw that parity build had started and I thought all was good. But no, parity build speed has dropped to 1-2 MB/sec and the syslog shows many read errors on disk 11. So I think that disk is a goner too. The bad thing is I don't have a valid parity disk now. Is it possible to copy as much files as possible from the bad disk to a new disk and then replace the bad disk with the new disk, assigning the new disk to the same slot. What is the best way to accomplish this. Are there any utilities that can save data from a bad disk?
May 21, 201412 yr Is it possible you disturbed the cable to disk11 when you replaced the parity disk. I'd suggest shutting down and checking. You should also run a smart report on disk11 to check for signs of a failing disk. But many read errors at the OS level and slowdowns you are reporting are to typically signs of a cabling problem.
May 22, 201412 yr Author Thanks for the advice, save me some headaches. This all happened around midnight last evening. I shut down the server and took a good night sleep. This morning with a clear head, well sort of, I followed your advice, reseated connectors on M1015s, drive cages and some disks. I started the server and the server appeared more responsive. Parity build was started and I noticed no read errors on any disk. The parity build is still running without errors. Everything seems ok now. Many thanks so far.
May 22, 201412 yr Suggest you invest in drive cages so you don't have to physically open the server to swap a drive. What happened to you is incredibly common. My old server had no drive cages and I can't tell you the grief I went through.
