Getting SMART data from RAID attached drives

Featured Replies

I have a P5W DH motherboard that uses the Intel Matrix RAID.  These are defined in BIOS.  I haven't messed with it for a while and pretty much want to leave it alone.  But I'd like to be able to get a smart report off of two drives that are being used in a RAID-0 configuration.  (Yea, I know, probably not a good idea but it is what it is).  A third drive is just set up as an ordinary disk and I can get smart reports off of it with no trouble.

Would it be possible to undefine the array, setup the disks as ordinary disks, and boot into unRAID to take smart reports?  Then reboot, redefine the array, and then reboot into Windows?

I feel like once I undefine the array, it will not be possible to get the RAID controller to recognize it as a valid array again.  I don't know of any way to "backup" that configuration to restore it.  But if my motherboard failed and I were to get another one, there would have to be a way to get it to recognize the existing RAID pair.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?  Maybe there is a much easier way to get smart reports off of these drives.

(WeeboTech, you seem to have a lot of experience with RAID - hoping you might have a thought here).

I also have intel matrix raid, to get smart for my raid drives this is what I do:

Enter board bios and change SATA CONFIGURATION to IDE

Boot with MHDD boot cd, select disk and press F8 to see SMART report

Go to bios and change SATA CONFIGURATION back to RAID

Cool!  I kept looking through the manual at the RAID configuration.  This seems much more promising.

I will set it to IDE mode, not AHCI or Raid (which it is now), and turn off the boot rom (which probably doesn't matter). I just don't want the RAID BIOS to have any chance of getting involved.

I looked at the MHDD boot cd - it looks great.

I am doing a gigantic backup today, just in case.  Will try tonight.

Thanks Johnnie!
