August 7, 201411 yr Hi all, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place or is just a plain dumb question, but its been a long time since I've been on here as my server has had no issues and I've not had the urge to mess with it... However, I'm now looking into an upgrade from v5 to v6 and I'm pretty confused. There's a lot of info about virtualisation and it sounds as though plugins and applications now run very differently. And it reads like an install of v6 requires a complete over write of the flash drive with only the config file coming over from the old install. So, this makes me wonder - will I have to resinstall and set up all of my existing plugins via a new method? I'm currently running sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato and Plex Media Server. Can I run these plugins on the new unraid v6 or am I looking at a day's work setting them all up again from scratch? Thanks in advance for any help with this.
August 7, 201411 yr unRaid v5 is 32-bit, and unRaid v6 is 64-bit. The plugins from v5 are NOT compatible with v6, so yes you will need to upgrade your plugins. But it is fairly easy to do. For sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato and Plex Media Server, PhAzE has generously created v6 versions of the plugins and you can migrate your existing configuration/databases to the v6 version: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33341.0 Optionally, instead of using plugins, you can run all those applications in Dockers: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33822.0 I recommend backing up your existing flash drive, installing unRaid v6 as a new install and ensure everything is working, and then install the 64-bit versions of your apps one at a time (linking the new install to your old configurations).
August 7, 201411 yr Author Brilliant, thanks for the really prompt reply. I'll have a eras through the links you sent me when I return home. Just one more quick question, would I see an advantage by running the applications in Dockers as opposed to using plugins? Or is it more a case of future proofing where plugins might be slowly phased out eventually?
August 7, 201411 yr Dockers solve the problem of conflicts that we often had with different plugins using different versions of libraries. They also insulate the unRAID OS from the addons. Even though 64bit v6 is still a beta, its ability to better utililize memory than the 32bit v5 can make it more stable in some ways.
August 7, 201411 yr Also, if you want to use dockers, be sure to get the Extended Docker configuration addon. It makes setting up dockers as easy or maybe even easier than setting up plugins. Once you see it in action it will be a lot easier to understand how to use dockers. The one thing you will have to do to go to dockers is set up a btrfs drive, whether by converting your cache drive or adding another drive for this purpose. Many people are using SSDs for this.
August 7, 201411 yr Author Cool, thanks for the replies, I'll get the upgrade done and convert the cache drive to the new format (I'm assuming that it will still function as the cache drive) after I get back from holiday.
