Combining folders

Featured Replies

I have a share with split level 2, its goes something like this

Share

-720

    blah1

-1080

    blah2

-DVDs

    blah3

There are many many gigs of video files. I want to combine the 720 and 1080 folders into one called "HD". I think I need to change the split level (hmm now I'm confused), but how do I go about combining them? Just rename 720 to HD and then disk by disk move the ones from 1080? The dvds will be backups meaning video_ts folders. So I need a split level of....1, or 2 still? I think 2 still cause I'm not changing the folder depth.

Here's my stab at an answer, others may have better.

Leave the Split Level alone, just where it is.

For each drive that has only one or the other, but not both 720 and 1080, rename it to HD.  Done.

For each drive that has both, pick the one with the most and rename it to HD, then move all of the files from the other one to it, then delete the empty folder.  Done.

Moving files on the same drive is very quick.

Sounds about what I thought, but do I have to do this with the array off or on?

thanks

You won't be able to access the files if the array is stopped... the drives won't be mounted.

so I'm gonna say that you HAVE to do it with the array started (on).

Cheers,

Matt

thanks, looks good now. Just need to figure out if the ls -r thing is working so they don't spin up to list this dir now.
