Proper way to copy files from terminal to ensure correct permissions

Featured Replies

Hi, every time I copy files from a USB device attached to my tower to a user share via the tower terminal prompt, the permissions on the new files are screwed up. I can't move or delete them.  What is the correct way to do it?

Steps:

Attach USB device to tower

Ssh to tower as root

Mount exfat partition

Copy files from USB to /mnt /user/Video

Open Video share from Mac

Can't rename or delete the new files.

Thanks!

The sequence you mention is almost certainly setting the owner of the copied files to be root.  The easiest thing to do would be to run the command

newperms /mnt/user/Video

after doing the copy.

There are other ways of achieving the above result, but the details may well vary according to the format used on the USB disk.
