April 13, 200917 yr I am trying to install a larger parity disc. I disconnected my old disc and plugged in a 1.5TB Seagate (ST31500341AS). UnRaid came back with an error that the parity disc is only 460GB and is not the largest disc. I removed it, plugged it into a different machine, reset the Max LBA to the proper size under Seagate Tools for DOS, initiated and formatted the disc under Windows, stuck it back into the UnRaid box, and it still shows 460GB. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a BIOS upgrade on my MoBo? Thanks, Dave
April 13, 200917 yr Check a SMART report for the drive, could be interesting. Not an expert here, but there are a few low level drive commands that may not survive a reboot, unless a separate option is forced. I can't imagine that SeaTools would not default to the more permanent changes, but you might check for an option to save more permanently the corrected drive size. You could also, after setting the correct size, reboot and check the drive again with SeaTools to see if the change 'stuck'.
April 13, 200917 yr Do I need a BIOS upgrade on my Motherboard? What disk size is reported in the BIOS? (I've read that some BIOS do need updates to handle larger drives)
April 15, 200917 yr Author Ok...problem seems to be solved. After reading your posts and searching the web, it seemed the specific problem may be a compatibility issue between the Seagate drive and Gigabyte MoBo. So instead of pulling the drive and using a different machine to set Max LBA size, I booted to SeaTools for DOS on the UnRaid box. I checked the BIOS before SeaTools came up and the drive was shown as 500GB. In SeaTools it showed as 1.5TB without having to change any settings or run anything. I then rebooted to the BIOS and it now showed 1.5TB. On to UnRaid and it properly shows 1.5TB. Whatever little glitch exists between the drive and motherboard, SeaTools seems to be able to fix. But you have to run SeaTools on that drive/MoBo combo to let it do it's magic. Not sure that really explains anything, but I'm happy if it works! Many thanks for your help and support...as always! Dave
