Newbie Help: Installing Transmission

Featured Replies

I feel totally silly for having to even ask this: but I'm not very well versed in Linux and have only had my unRAID box up for about 24 hours.

I'm just trying to install Transmission, and I'm at a total loss!

Running 6.0-beta13 and successfully installed the Transmission plugin by PhAzE

I understand that the PhAzE plugin for Transmission requires Transmission to actually be installed (although there is an Install button within the plugin GUI, it does not appear to do anything) - but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to actually install Tranmission. The Slackware package on the official Transmission website links to a site in Italian. I tried downloading the source code from the Transmission website in order to compile it (I barely know how to do this, but figured I'd try) but WinRar complains that the archive is corrupt.

Anyway, not trying to sound like a whiner, I'm just usually able to make more headway than I am with this. I figure if I can get Transmission installed, I'll probably learn enough from the experience to be able to install other applications and get a little bit more familiar with Linux / Slackware / unRAID - which is a huge part of why I built a server.

Also, it seems like Transmission Remote is the web GUI for Transmission - and according to PhAzE's notes that's required as well. Would I need to compile that from source as well?

Help!

You're definitely overthinking this.

The plugin installs transmission for you, and it has its own webGUI.

Transmission Remote is a somewhat better interface than the built-in webGUI, but not required. I use it and for me it was just a Windows executable download. It is not a web interface.

No need to ever see linux for this.

Maybe I REALLY screwed something up, because Transmission is not available through the web interface (tried http://ip-of-server:9091).

Here's what unRAID says about the whole thing:

I am using a docker for transmission now, and I have never used the PhAzE plugins, but I have been using transmission on unRAID as long as I have had unRAID.

I think you need to set a config directory. What happens if you check the box next to Config directory?

Ah! You are correct, specifying the config directory option. The default option (/usr/local/Transmission/config) claims that it will not survive a reboot. I'm assuming it's safe to store the config files on the USB flash drive that unRAID is installed on? I know that the Plex for unRAID documentation urges against this, but I'm assuming that's specific to Plex and the config files for Transmission won't change enough for this to be a problem? I know you said you don't run Transmission in this way.

I hadn't gotten around to researching Docker, that seems really cool (and a much better way of doing things). Did you use this config script to get it running? https://github.com/firecat53/dockerfiles/tree/master/transmission

Thank you so much for your help!

Transmission does write to its config folder. That is where it stores the actual .torrent files, for example. Most people put their plugins folders on the cache drive. Whatever you are doing for plex is probably a good idea for other plugins.

I use plex in a docker also. Most of the popular dockers have a version created by members of this forum. Just browse the Docker subforum.

Awesome! I think you've given me plenty of information for me to run off and learn some more. I really appreciate it - I'm going to explore both angles, but it sounds like Docker is a better way to go, especially since I'm learning. Being able to just delete the container in the even that I make a mistake seems like a much better way of going about things, plus this opens up a whole world of applications outside of the normal Slackware / unRAID plugin space.
