February 24, 201511 yr Hi Guys These noctua 120mm 4 pin low rpm fans are sitting there and going from 300 or 400 to 1200 and then right back down, and this doesn't stop. Spoke to super micro and they don't support any fans that aren't there own. In the IPMI there are three fan settings but they don't change anything as the motherboard see low rpms and assume the fan is failing and ramps it up. Does anyone know of a solution. Driving me crazy Thanks
February 24, 201511 yr Check in the configuration screen (which may not be the same place as the display values) you might be able to set the low end there. I know on my Tyan boards I can set the minimum as low as I want and I thought my X9SCM board let me set minimums as well - but I might not be able to set zero for instance like I can with my Tyan's just don't remember.
February 24, 201511 yr Author Supermicro does not allow you to set these values. There are three fan settings standard/something higher?/optimal but the fans do the same for all. I believe their fan minimum threshold is 800. But not changeable. I was told I can edit this with ipmiutil but it seems to be a little beyond my skill level. Didn't know if there was an easier way or if someone has done this already and can walk me thru. Thanks
February 24, 201511 yr You are correct. When I checked at home I cannot set anything in the IPMIView program screen nor using IPMI from a browser connection to the X9SCM. I don't believe it was available from the bios screens either but I'm not able to check to confirm right now. So that is a bummer wish it (X9SCM MB) had that available like my Tyan boards. You might have to go to a fan controller that is separate from the mother board to get what you want. Assuming the MB lets you run with NO fans connected anyway.
February 25, 201511 yr Only thing I'd say is try a different fan. I'm guessing the Noctua is getting slower than some pre-set limit on the motherboard, so it's adding a bit more juice to the fan to keep it up near 1200rpm. 1000rpm may be a lower limit. I have a 80mm Noctua which doesn't work properly on my MSI board, it spins OK for a little while then stops, then revs up to full speed, rinse and repeat.
February 25, 201511 yr Author Its a big pain to return the two noctua fans and remove server from rack open place new fans etc....I am lazy Do you think there is any negative to this, will it burn out the fans early, the noise of throttling up and down only bothers me when near server. Out of room I dont hear it. Your thoughts?
February 25, 201511 yr Fans will wear out quicker, but it might be 4 years rather than 5, or it might be 10 years rather than 15. Then again, I had a 92mm Noctua fan die after 3 months running full speed 24/7.
