First time upgrading parity disk - encouragement needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been running unRaid for a little while with a couple of 500GB disks I had kicking around. Now reached the point where I need to add more space. I've bought a couple of 3TB disks, which should keep me going for a little while longer. Obviously, one of these needs to replace the parity, so I'm a little nervous about doing that. I've been searching the forums and I think I have all the info I need, I just want to check I'm following the most up to date info and not missing something.

These are the steps I'm expecting to follow: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33277.msg306300#msg306300 Is this the best/ most up to date? I'm on 5.0.5 if that makes a difference.

For the pre-clear steps, is there a way of triggering this from the Web page? I see here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=26121.0 that it was briefly added to the SimpleFeatures plugin. Is there any current way of doing this, or do I have to telnet in every time as described here http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial#Preclearing_With_Screen?

At the moment there is no supported way of doing a pre-clear from the GUI - it has to be done from a console/telnet session.  If using a telnet session then it is recommended that you do the pre-clear under screen so it does not get abandoned if the telnet session is closed for any reason.

It is planned to add this feature at some point in v6, but it is not there yet.

If your intent is to take the old parity disk and add it as an array disk this is the right procedure. If your intent is to remove the current parity from the array, there is a simpler way. But following the procedure enables recoverability should a drive fail during the parity build, so I'd suggest using it in either situation.

Preclear should be run in a screen session or from the server console. There are no GUI tools I am aware of to initiate a preclear. Running preclear from a telnet session doesn't work because when the telnet session times out the preclear will stop. In a screen session it will run until it is finished.
