"Could not find kernel image: linux" while trying to boot

Featured Replies

Just downloaded syslinux and unraid per the Server Basic instructions.  used syslinux and extracted unraid to the usb drive.  Stick it in my server and it starts to boot but I get:

SYSLINUX 3.20 yadayada

Could not find kernel image: linux

boot: _

Can't get any further.  Did I do something wrong or is this some hardware issue or what?

Sounds like the 'syslinux.cfg' file is not on the Flash.  Following should be on the Flash

config/disk.cfg

config/go

config/ident.cfg

config/icense.txt

config/network.cfg

config/share.cfg

bzimage

bzroot

readme.txt

syslinux.cfg

Yea I've got all those files in the root of my usb drive.  Here's the contents of the syslinux.cfg:

default UnRaid

label UnRaid

kernel bzimage

append initrd=bzroot ramdisk_size=120000 root=/dev/ram0

What brand/model/size USB flash are you using?  What motherboard?  Is it possible to try a different Flash?

Doublechecked that I have the newest bios available and i do.  Tried turning off all the extra onboard things, tried quickboot off, tried USB 1.1 mode.

The fact you can get it to boot on your Dell seems to rule out the Flash itself.

If you try a different Flash, try to get one which is smaller then 1GB, say 256MB or 512MB.

Another thing you can try is to format your flash using the HP Formatting tool; this may change how the bios views the flash device (as a hard drive instead of a removable drive).

Yea I tried to grab that a minute ago, but the link doesn't work.  It tries a while and dies.

Found it via another site and tried formatting and syslinux and reextracting.  Same as before, can't find kernel.  Does it matter if its fat or fat32?

It "shouldn't" matter if it's FAT or F32; of course it "should" also boot...

Well that's just stupid.  FAT works fine, FAT32 does not.  I even went back to FAT32 to verify that was it.

OK, so I've got a login prompt now, what do I do from there?  Only thing i see on the instructions is go to \\Tower, which i've tried to do in IE and firefox.  Firefox goes to towerrecords.com and IE goes to msn search.  My router is set up for DHCP.  I checked it's interface and it only lists this computer, so its not connecting.  I suppose that means my onboard ethernet isn't supported?

Hmm, yes looking at your m/b link, we don't support too many 10/100 ethernet devices because there are so many of them and keeping up with latest versions of them is simply beyond our resources.  However, we approach this on a case-by-case basis.  Please send me an email to [email protected] (so I have your return email address) & we'll make a build that supports that chip.

By the way, I also had the same issue. With FAT32 it would not boot, but with FAT it boots fine.
