Another question about shares

Featured Replies

I have a question for those people that have the same share on multiple drives. Right now I am running unRAID basic with 3 drives, but I do not have the same share across multiple drives. Whenever I access a share from my desktop for the first time, the disk starts up.

What I need to know is if I have the same share across multiple drives then when I access the share from my desktop will all the drives with the share spin up?

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

I can view all the list of files on my shared dvd and divx folders across three drives, and none of them will spin up. Only when you open a file, the disk where the file is located will spin up. I think the flash cashes the file list, so to view the file list you do no access the actual drives. To prove that, if you add files to the drives and do not update the cached list, you won't be able to see it in the //tower/dvds or //tower/divx shares.

I use MediaPortal on my HTPC and very time I access a share there is a few second delay and when I close MediaPortal and look at the server webpage I see that the disk has spun up. This is without playing any files or navigating to other folders.

The same thing happens when I access the shares from Windows explorer for the first time after a reboot.

I don't mind if one disk spins up, which it does right now, what I am concerned with is when I have 12 drives in my unRAID server, will all of them spin up (except the parity).
