Use Acronis True Image to backup/restore Vista from unRAID?

Featured Replies

Please bare with an OS X user.  I use Vista 64 and have pre-ordered Windows 7 for my HTPC.  Can I use Acronis True Image to backup my Vista/Windows 7 HTPC to my unRAID?  If so can you do a full system restore in the event of an HDD failure from the unRAID backup?

I can't speak about vista 64, or the newest version of True-Image, but I've been able to do exactly what you described with win95, win-XP, and win2000 using a much earlier version 6 of True-Image.

In addition, with a full backup, with True-Image installed on my computer, I can even "mount" an old backup as a drive and then use file-explorer to get an old file, even from a backup of a laptop I no longer own.

As far as restoring to a bare disk, I did exactly that to upgrade the HD in my wife's laptop a number of years ago.  I backed up her old 10 Gig HD to the network, then removed her old disk, installed a completely new, un-partitioned, un-formatted 20 Gig drive disk.  I then booted up on the "recovery CD" you can create when installing True-Image.  Once booted up, I restored from the backed up image to the new hard-disk.

It asked if I wanted to use the entire new disk, and in my case, I did.  The new disk was loaded from the backup image, the file-system expanded to use the full 20 Gig size of the new disk, and I was up and running with all my files and all my folders, and all my programs intact.  I was *Very* happy.

Unless True-Image has reduced their features (and I doubt they did), the new version will do as you want.

Just downloaded the trial and it won't even start the program.  I get the splash screen and it says processing.  Then I get an error screen that says "...detected unsupported hard drives...does not support Windows Dynamic Discs, EZ Drives, ect."  What does this mean and why won't it at least run?  All I have is my BD/HD DVD drive and C: HD in my HTPC.  There is nothing else connected (other than the unRAID shares) except a USB key board and LCD.

Sounds like a question you should ask on an acronis forum.  Obviously, it does not like how you have your Vista 64bit disk defined.

Just to, relatively pointlessly, backup Joe L.

I also currently backup my main desktop to unraid using Acronis in the method described.

Works as advertised.

Anyone use the deploy tools or the bare metal restores on a different box?
