Can't change folder names on user share - Mac OS X

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a problem changing folder names on my user shares. It used to work, but now I get permission errors. For example, if I have a folder "/mnt/user0/video/Folder_name" and I try to change the name to "/mnt/user0/video/Folder-name" I get a permissions error in OS X using the Finder. Files in the folder I can rename. I can delete the folder as well.

If I FTP I have no problems changing folder names. In terminal I can also change names, just not from the Finder. This used to work, but at some time stopped. I am using 4.5-beta6 and OS X Snow Leopard. The syslog has no messages regarding the permissions error.

A ls -l in Terminal has the following output:

drwx------ 1 root root  88 May  9 07:19 Valkyrie\ (2008)/

drwx--x--x 1 root root 104 Mar 17 15:16 Vicky\ Cristina\ Barcelona\ (2008)/

drwx------ 1 root root  88 Apr  8 11:15 WALL-E\ (2008)/

Thanks in advance,

Roland

For some reason you can only change the folder names if you are in the "list" view. There seems to be a bug in snow leopard that doesn't allow you to change names in column view. Hope this help.

I have similar problems with snow leopard and 4.5beta6 when connecting via SMB. It's more than just a view problem. I can rename certain folders on disk1 but not certain folders on disk2. This is irregardless of list view or column view. More over sometimes I can rename a folder in column view and then 10 minutes later when I try to rename it back I get the same permissions issue. Also, it seems that the deeper the directory tree, the less likely you will be able to rename a file or folder. As it stands for me, using unRAID via SAMBA on current Apple products for anything other than file reads (performance limited reads at that) is not feasible.

In the interim, I've switched to using NFS which has had the benefit of greatly increased transfer speeds, but stale NFS handle errors. At least I can interact with my files.

I am still on Leopard for now and have not had any problems, with the exception that while "quicklook previews" are being generated I can’t edit the name of a folder or file.

For me neither column view or list view work.

Haven't had problems like that yet but I'm still running Tiger...  :(

Hi,

I exported a user share using NFS and it is possible to change folder names using NFS, but not Samba. I wonder if this is a samba problem specifically for Unraid, otherwise I think that there would be a general outcry in the Mac community about Samba being broke in Snow Leopand.

I think this will just be a waiting game with Apple. There are numerous discussions about several bugs with the Snow Leopard Finder and Samba on the apple support forums. Users have only been able to rectify the problem by reverting to Leopard.  It appears we have to hope that 10.6.2 will address the issue or some clever workaround will arise from forum discussions.

From my experience the issue is confined only to the finder.  I have a program called Better Finder Rename that I've used for the past year or so for mass renaming files. It has no problem renaming files on my unRAID server that finder claims that I cannot.

Here's a link to the discussion thread specific to our renaming folders problem

Cheers.
