[Solved] Unraid will not boot

Featured Replies

I have not turned off my unraid server off for many months but had to today due to a power outage.  When the power came back I turned it on but get error messages during the booting process.  It is version 5.

Things appear to go wrong when " Cannot open root device "(null)" . . . . appears on the screen.  The attached photo shows the messages before and after the cannot open message appears.  After the last message everything just stops.

I am not very technical but have used unraid trouble free for many years.  Please help!

Put the unRAID flash boot drive in your PC and let it checkdisk.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried it but no luck, still get the same error.

Do you think it is caused by an error on the flash drive?  I do have a full backup of it if needed.

I'd go back to basics first.  Power off completely, wait 15 seconds, then power on and check the BIOS settings carefully.  Once convinced they are correct, start a Memtest from the unRAID boot menu, and let it run 2 passes.  If perfect, then compare your flash with the backup, see what is different, restore from the backup if necessary, and try to boot unRAID again.

I fixed this in the end by copying bzimage and bzroot from the backup to the flash drive (overwriting the existing files).
