September 14, 200916 yr I have set up user-level security, and a share where I intend anyone to be able to both browse and mount the share. I set up a share like this: Share name: Media Export (SMB): Export read-only Exceptions: bob Valid users: <empty> Invalid users: <empty> I would expect anyone to be able to browse to the share and mount it. But (1) it's not visible in the workgroup-server-share browse dialog, and (2) If I try to mount it directly using \\tower\Media it prompts me for a password. Did I misunderstand the settings? I thought having empty valid users would make it available to anyone.
September 14, 200916 yr You cannot mix user- and share-level security on a single samba server. If you have a small user base, your easiest solution is simply to create a matching account for each of them on your unRAID box. As long as the user names and passwords match Windows, their access will be transparent. If you have many users, you may be able to incorporate the information found here into unRAID's samba config to emulate Windows' fallback behavior when an account match is not found; IIRC you can add custom samba parameters to unRAID by putting them in a specific config file, but I'm afraid I don't recall the specifics; I'll leave that as an exercise for you.
