Why aren'y we using ResierFS / Ext4 w/OverlayFS as the .img device?

As the Sub. reads, why use btrfs on top of another FS? I understand using a pseudo-device, but why btrfs?

 

Been running docker engine on ResierFS w/OverlayFS for quite some time now, performance is much greater than the next performant, direct-lvm, then btrfs. If the performance delta were smaller I would not care, but it is significant.
