December 5, 201510 yr Been replacing/ upgrading some drives in my server and wanted to ensure there were no HPA's on my drives. However one of the new drives in the server throws up the following error when using the hdparm -N command: READ_NATIVE_MAX_ADDRESS_EXT failed: Input/output error Don't think it has anything to do with my motherboard/ setup as I am using a HP Microserver N40L and the other drives all work fine using the command, even when I move them about in the server. Once I started digging on the forums I came across a few threads in the past: https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=42018 https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=37626 https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=39611 The only similarity is that they are all WD drives. In my case the drive is a WD 5TB drive, model number WDC WD50EZRX and pulled from an external enclosure. So is it true that at least some WD drives won't work with hdparm?
December 5, 201510 yr Community Expert I can’t help with the issue itself but you can search your syslog to check for HPA, if present it will appear like this: ata1.00: HPA detected: current 3907027055, native 3907029168 ata1.00: ATA-8: SAMSUNG HD204UI, S2HFJ1BZ902507, 1AQ10001, max UDMA/133
December 9, 201510 yr Author Thanks for that. I've had a look in the syslog and there isn't any mention of HPA. Also I have 2 other 5TB drives (Seagate and Toshiba) and I can add both as my data drives even when the WD is parity so I guess there isn't any HPA. Still it is something to look out for in future.
