USBs Won't Boot

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am trying to get a brand new install of UNRAID going on my main PC and no matter how many USB sticks I try, none of them will boot UNRAID on the main PC.

I have used 4 different USB sticks and everyone of them will not boot.

SanDisk USB 3.0 16GB Ultra Fit - https://www.sandisk.com/home/usb-flash/ultra-fit-usb

Generic USB 2.0 512MB

Generic USB 2.0 1GB

Lexar USB 3.0 32GB S73 - http://www.amazon.ca/Lexar-JumpDrive-128GB-Flash-LJDS73-128ASBNA/dp/B00BXHJOD8

My motherboard is a MSI Z87-G45 Gaming and the motherboard recognizes each of the USB's.  When you try to boot them from the BIOS the screen just flashes black and then goes right back to the BIOS.

I have tried booting Clonezilla from all of the USB's above and it works just fine so I know that Linux can boot from USB on the motherboard.  What am I doing wrong here?

I am following the directions on the products page and have watched the YouTube video on it.  The make_bootable.bat completes without error each time.  I am using Windows 10 to create all the USB installs as well.

Any help?

OK just tried creating the USBs on a Windows 8.1 Machine.  No difference, none of them will booth still.

Are you running make bootable as administrator?

Try manually selecting the boot order (usually F12)  Make sure you select the legacy mode (not UEFI)

Try a different port (if it was in USB3, try USB2 and vice versa)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have figured it out so feel free to delete this thread.  I apparently had the BIOS locked to UEFI mode and the option to change was grayed out.  I "Reset to defaults" and Legacy boot mode became available.  As soon as I turned that on the USB key booted.

Sorry for wasting time

If you had the issue, odds on someone else will.  Nothing is a waste of time (besides watching American Idol)
