Help setting up VPN to conenct to Plex docker with very different devices

Featured Replies

So I seem to have run into a dilemma as I have never setup VPN into my home network before.

The clients I would like to connect to my unraid server running the plex docker are:

Fire TV Sticks

XBox 360

XBox One

Windows 8.1 Phones

IPad Air 2

The router I am using is an ASUS RT-AC68U which supports PPTP and OpenVPN

The problem is that i cannot find a client for all these devices to be able to establish a vpn connection.

Windows phone uses IKEv2 natively, IPad Air 2 uses L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, or Cisco IPSec natively, I have no idea how to get the XBox 360, XBox One, or Fire TV sticks to connect.

So I am at a loss on how to try to secure this server from the outside world.  Any thoughts or ideas on what I can do?

Is the server in one location and devices in different locations outside the server network, or are some devices local?  Trying to grasp what is on local network vs. some other location or mobile.

You don't need to setup a VPN for Plex access.  You will need to open port 32400 on your router though.

Setting up a VPN server for this I can't see working, as for each client you'd have to setup a VPN client, and I'm 100% sure you won't be able to do that on an Xbox...

Server is in one location.

Everything inside the network would also be used outside the network.

For example, I am using XBox 360s, an XBox One, and a Fire TV Stick inside my network.

Outside we would use our windows phones, another person would connect with his 360, another with an xbox one, another with a fire tv stick, etc.

I've got the same setup with an Asus router.  Get the Plex docker configured and make sure it can communicate with the outside world and everything else should fall into place.

That's what I was thinking as well, but the golden rule from everything I have been reading on the forums is that unraid is not secure, period.  Opening anything to the outside world essentially leaves you open to attack eventually.

Opening the Unraid webui on port 80 is what we are referring to there.  Opening any port is a security risk to an extent, but it's a measured one...

So currently I am using duckdns to keep track of my ip address as it changes.  I have not forwarded any ports but my plex client test on my windows phones seem to still connect from their LTE network connection and play content off the server just fine.  Why would this be?  It makes me think my server is exposed to the rest of the world.

Plex uses UPnP to open the port automatically then as far as I'm aware it contacts the Plex site to update DNS.

Once you sign in on a client, you grab the IP from there.

Ah ok, that makes sense.  As a test I temporarily forwarded my port 8080 to my unraid machine to see if I could get access to unmenu and I could.  When I removed the port forward it was locked out again.

Would it be more secure to use port forwarding and specify a port in plex than letting upnp automatically open a port?

tbh I don't think there's any difference, I manually do it as it's more reliable..
