Which CPU?

Featured Replies

So I have my unraid running as a Nas, with Sonarr, CouchPotato, SABnzb and Plex server.

It is running on an i7 860 at the moment which is working great, but I have a G3258 over clocked to 4.5ghz here that I am thinking about putting in it?

Would it be worth swapping over??

I don't have plans to stream any more than 2 at once, and don't have very much HD content even, mostly DVDrips and SDTV so both have plenty of 'Passmarks' in that regard. I figure the pentium would just be a lot more efficient.  but not sure if the multi threaded i7 would be more flexible going forward if I want to run VMs or something.

Replacing would also require a new cpu and mobo in my PC, so might just wait till I find a game that actually NEEDS quadcore.

Cheers

Keep the i7.

It has more cores which will aid VM's performance, but more importantly, it supports VT-d, required to pass a video card to a VM.

Yes, keep the i7.  The Pentium is a nice entry level processor for NAS duties but VMs and multiple streams want more CPU than that.
