February 11, 201610 yr I am building my first *proper* server. My use cases: Media storage(~12TB Windows Gaming VM using GPU passthrough Dockers: Jenkins, database, git repo, team chat server, plex, owncloud, transcoder The hardware(I have everything in hand except MOBO, RAM, and flash drive): Xeon e3 1276v3 SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182821 16GB of this http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=D38GRE160S Sandisk fit USB that plugs directly into the mobo...? I already have 4 4tb HGST and Seagate hard drives that I will be using. I also have 3 120gb SSDs that I can use for cache drives. GTX980 Some Questions: Can I easily shut down my Windows VM and start up an OpenElec instance using the same graphics card without doing significant reconfiguration in the Unraid console? Can I do things like push a season of a show to the SSD at once to avoid HDD spinups over the next week when I watch an episode? Is there anything I should be aware of with hard drive setup with that motherboard? I have never used an LSI card and I want to make sure I get trim, SMART and all that fund stuff.
February 25, 201610 yr Author I have another question for the experts... Can i share the same graphics card with multiple VMs? More specifically, can I use my gfx card for xbmc/openelec vm 90% of the time and shut down that vm, start a windwos 10 vm and play on steam without significant configuration changes in the unraid console? Thanks.

AMD's GPUs give issues where they don't reset properly after use (see Linus' video on YouTube where he talks about that when he's taking the 7 gamers machine apart).
February 25, 201610 yr I wish I could afford an build like this...... The mobo and xeon together costs like 900USD here (around 8000NOK) and then it is the rest needed.... According to one of the 7 in 1 videos from Linus (not sure if he mentions it in the build video or the dissemble video) he says that with Nvidia GPU it frees the card correct then shutting down the VM using it, with AMD the whole UnRaid computer needs to be rebooted to free the GPU.
February 27, 201610 yr Author Good to know. Luckily I have a 980 already so that will not be an issue for me. Thanks
