February 14, 201610 yr I currently have a 4TB parity WD Red drive (and three more in a data array). I want to upgrade the 4TB parity to a 5TB parity so I can start adding larger drives to the array. Here is what I did and what happened: 1) Stopped Array 2) Unassigned Parity from Array 3) Started Array with no Parity 4) Stopped Array 5) Performed clean shutdown 6) Installed 5TB drive 7) Disconnected original 4TB parity Boot back up 9) Shows parity disk as wrong 10) Assign 5TB to Parity Disk 11) Given Upgrade Parity start array option - Do so 12) Rebuilds parity, says its fine. Now the first time, I stopped the array with the intention of shutting down and hooking up the original parity drive again, however, when i stopped the array, the parity drive again said it was wrong, and gave the option to rebuild parity. Back to square one. Next time, I did basically the same thing, instead of after the parity was rebuilt, I did a parity check. The gui reported green after this happend but underneath I got an error: Duration: Warning: Division by zero in /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Helpers.php I read maybe that can be corruption of the USB drive, so I stopped the array (again the parity was not detected as valid and gave me the rebuild parity start array option) Ran checkdisk /f on the USB drive, found a few minor things and repaired them. Now I have the 5TB doing a preclear, and I have the original parity 4TB drive assigned as Parity. I guess my question is, what am i doing wrong? Thoughts?
February 14, 201610 yr Community Expert If there is corruption on the USB drive, this can stop changes being saved. Since you seem to have fixed some corruption then it might be worth seeing if the changes now stick.
February 14, 201610 yr Author Once the preclear finishes, I will do another attempt at the parity upgrade and report back.
February 15, 201610 yr Author After fixing the corruption on the unraid USB stick the next parity-sync went well. I can stop and start the array while keeping the new parity disk. GREAT. Was worried there for a minute. I suppose now I will put the other 4TB back in and preclear it while doing a parity check on the new 5TB. EDIT: clarity
