Intel PRO NIC Problems

Featured Replies

Hey,

im currently setting up my secound unraid system, the first one was just a trial key on a minimal system to check out how unraid works, but now im trying to get unraid running on my server mashine.

However it seems like unraid can not communicate with my INTEL PRO 1000 PT Quad NIC (Plugged into a PCIe x4 slot). I tried disabling the Onboard NIC but then i had no connection at all.

I´ve includet a part of the syslog file (The hole log is to large to upload it here...)

Any suggestions how to solve my problem?

Thanks for your anwer!

I already stumbled upon that thread but it didnt solve my problem. As far as i can see it i dont have a BIOS Setting like that... Also i dont have another OS laying arround to check...

I installed the NIC in a difrent PCIe Slot, which made a lot of error messages disappear, but still unraid cant connect to the LAN or the Internet through my Intel NIC...

Attached is my current diagnostics zip

Did you run lspci from the command line?

I am not the world's greatest expert on analyzing log files but it looks like it is loading the RealTek driver:

Feb 20 19:48:43 Tower kernel: r8169 0000:03:00.0: can't disable ASPM; OS doesn't have ASPM control

You should disable on-board NIC in the BIOS.

Thanks again for your help!

Running lspci from the command line gives me the same results as the devices file.

Disabling the onboard NIC results in no connection at all, i cant access the Server when i do that (apart from console)

To me it feels like the Intel Nic isnt even there when i plug it into the first slot (PCIe x16), when i plug the NIC into the secound slot (PCIe x4) theres at least a sign of existence (many "corrected Errors", like the first log i uploaded)

I seem to recall that unRAID assigns the first NIC device that it finds to be the one that it will use.  I have this feeling ( from something I have read somewhere) that it 'ignores' all other NIC's once it has found one that should work.

I flashed my BIOS to the newest stable version, then tried to disable the the onboard NIC while the Intel NIC was installed in the PCIe x16 Slot-> No NIC was detected

Then i moved the NIC to the PCIe x4 Slot (Onboard still disabled) -> I got my error messages Back (first post) and still no NIC...

Could it be that my Intel NIC and my Mainboard dont work together?

Apparently some of the old Intel NICs have problems in PCI Express v2 slots (oddly enough, I've not run into this problem myself with two Intel PRO/1000 dual and an IBM branded quad). Or you may have a bad card... try booting a Linux LiveCD or something similar.

The Intel card is not being detected, based on your last diagnostics post.  Has this card been verified working in another computer?  You say you have it in a x4 slot, do you mean the second x16 slot that runs in x4 mode?  Try the card in the primary x16 slot and post a diagnostics after booting.  Keep the on-board NIC enabled as you will need that until the Intel card is detected.  I was going to suggest a BIOS update since you were running initial release version on a Skylake board, but looks like you just did that.

One thing I encountered a while back was that a card was not seating properly in the PCI Express plug on the MB when I put the screw in that secures the card.  The issue was that with the bracket on the card was not perpendicular to the fingers on the card which caused the back of the board to cock-up when the screw was tightened.  In my case, bending the top of the bracket so that the screw opening was lined up when the fingers were properly seated in the slot fixed the issue.

Thanks to all for your replies!

I have two of these NICs, i tried changing them but still the same Problem, so either both are broken or its not the NIC...

Yes, when im talking about the x4 Slot im refering to the secound PCIe x16 slot which only runs on 4 Lanes

I´ll try booting from a live CD or something simular and report back with the results, also i will upload a diagnostic zip with the card pluged into the first PCIe x16 Slot.

EDIT:

I found something here https://communities.intel.com/thread/40117?start=0&tstart=0 (i hope its ok to post links to other forums here)

According to this my NIC doesnt work with newer PCIe Slots.

EDIT 2:

I tried using a diffrent card in that slot to ensure it works (i used a SATA HBA) and it does, so my NICs beeing to old seems to be more and more logical.

I also tried using them in Windows 7 (it is the only bootable CD a had around) and it told my the same as unraid did.

I´ll try to get a hold of the newer Versions mentioned in the above forum and try them out.
