February 28, 201610 yr I would like to buy a Slingbox for hockey to setup at my parents house. What Slingbox should I get, M2? Also how bad are the ads? Do they just show up once when you open the app or are they there the entire time? I need it to be full screen. I will be watching it on my TV which has a Mac computer hooked up to it but might be getting an Nvidia Shield if that would work better.
February 28, 201610 yr I have a Slingbox M1 (it is the exact same hardware as the M2, and is cheaper! Don't waste your money on the M2!!) I use it to watch NFL games when I am traveling outside of the country. Works great. I use the free apps on my iPhone, iPad, and Laptop. There is a 15 second video add when you first start the app which is a little annoying, but not bad enough for me to pay to remove the ads. Once you connect to the video stream and make it full screen, you don't see the banner ads any more. http://www.amazon.com/Sling-Media-SB370-100-Slingbox-M1/dp/B00LIP10KK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1456670646&sr=8-4&keywords=slingbox
February 28, 201610 yr Author So you can pay to remove the ads, is this through an app through the sling site? So if the M1 and M2 have the same hardware whats the difference?
February 29, 201610 yr Slingbox changed from paid mobile apps, to free apps with ads. At the same time they wanted to increase the cost of their hardware, so they released the M2 version. Same exact hardware, that was released along with free apps on mobile devices (though with ads). The original M1 version was cheaper, but required paid apps on mobile devices. But the new free apps work just fine with the M1 boxes. I'm not sure if you can pay to remove the video ads or just the banner ads. I have never paid anything beyond the initial cost of the M1 box.
February 29, 201610 yr Another option would be to get a network tuner (i.e. HDHomerun) use the Live TV capabilities of Emby. EDIT: I think there is also a third party for Plex.

Yeah I have a HDHR Prime, I need a Slingbox to setup at my parents. They have Direct TV so the Prime won't work. I also use Plex, works great. I tried Emby and the guide data and Live TV is really nice but still to buggy for me. I just need Root Sports Pittsburgh
