February 28, 201610 yr Hi all. Discovered unraid for myself couple of months ago and am now shopping for a box. Intended usage: NAS - only need small capacity, somewhere in the lines of 4-10TB Docker images - sickrage, sonarr, plex/emby, git server, jenkins... either Windows or Steambox vm for gaming potentially also HTPC client running on Kodi (would require integrated graphics) Requirements: maximum (reasonable) power efficiency, as the box will be running 24/7 (apart from the gaming vm) to be relevant, even from gaming perspective, in ~3 years I've come up with this initial parts list: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£219.91 @ Dabs) Motherboard: ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£73.92 @ Amazon UK) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£66.89 @ Amazon UK) Storage: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - unraid cache(£98.42 @ Misco UK) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - for unraid/vms/dockers(£129.00 @ Amazon UK) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£87.99 @ Ebuyer) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£87.99 @ Ebuyer) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£87.99 @ Ebuyer) Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card (£274.98 @ Amazon UK) Case: Fractal Design Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower Case (£79.49 @ Ebuyer) Power Supply: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£70.73 @ Aria PC) Total: £1277.31 Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-02-28 12:02 GMT+0000 Questions: does this setup fulfill the listed reqs? is going with haswell reasonable at this time? would've gone with skylake, but this post made me worried about the Z170M chipset: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=46141.msg441036#msg441036. Wouldn't like to invest in a system that won't perform well for virtualisation. as I'm not interested in ECC memory, would it make sense to go with i7 instead of xeon line, so the box could also run vm for Kodi? (due to having integrated graphics unit)? So what are your thoughts on this? Am I on the right track here?
February 29, 201610 yr Go for 4TB drives, the £ per GB is better on those at the moment. One SSD for VMS, one SSD for Dockers and the rest would do. Seems good!
March 1, 201610 yr Author The £/GB is better for 3TB ones, at least by pcpartpicker comparison (verified via amazon as well). Also discovered a mistake I made with the cpu selection - apparently nvidia gpus cannot be passed thorugh if it's the only GPU, meaning cpu with integrated gpu is required. So, couple of changes were introduced: i7 form factor to mini ITX (this new MOBO also gives wifi & BT) changed PSU to 450W version; according to my calculations it should be enough CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor (£250.59 @ Amazon UK) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£26.49 @ Ebuyer) Motherboard: ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard (£121.54 @ Amazon UK) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory (£78.89 @ Amazon UK) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£64.00 @ Amazon UK) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£129.00 @ Amazon UK) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£87.99 @ Ebuyer) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£87.99 @ Ebuyer) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£87.99 @ Ebuyer) Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card (£274.98 @ Amazon UK) Case: Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case (£69.95 @ Amazon UK) Power Supply: Silverstone Strider Gold 450W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular SFX Power Supply (£86.59 @ Kustom PCs) Total: £1366.00 Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-03-01 00:04 GMT+0000
