X-Case rackmount

Featured Replies

I just bought the Extra value 424 case and it was 40£ shipping to Norway with UPS. Sent on Friday and delivered on Wednesday.

You're going for an expander to save on controller cards?

Thanks for your answer!

Just take a look at the videos on the site of xcase. You have a very nice case!

The shipping price is not expensive and fast delivery. That's very positive! I'm located in the Netherlands so in theory the price should be lower as 40 £.

Yes that are indeed my thoughts but i think it doesn't saves much. Also less cable clutter in the case and I only need 1 expansion slot.

What are you experience so far with this case? How is the build quality? Do you know if the Seagate st8000v2 fits in the caddy.I thought there where some problems with the mounting holes with certain caddy types. Did you order rails if so what the quality and do you have a picture. I can't find a picture of the rails on the xcase site.

Just remember that if you use parity, the speed will be much lower with an expander, but I guess you already know that.

I got the case on Wednesday, so haven't installed it yet, but from what I saw the quality is good. I had one slot where the caddy didn't go in/out smoothly, but it was just the metal part the latch locks on that was a millimeter to big. Easily fixed with a light knock with a hammer  :)

I'll check the caddy for the screw holes later today, but I don't think its going to be a problem.

The rails is of OK quality, but I ordered for 80 cm deep rack, so not the same as you can choose on the product page, but I'll take a picture later.

I'm not sure how much slower it will be because the backplane can use 2 channels. So I want to attach it with 2 cables to the HBA card.

I have a 100 cm deep rack and need 80 cm long rails. I'm not sure if the rails on the product page are the correct one.

Those are not the correct rails. I don't think they are listed on their site for some reason. I just said in the quote that I needed rack rails for 80 cm deep rack and they made a new quote for me with the correct rails.

Okay, clear. Thanks! :)

Sorry for the late reply. Got busy with other stuff yesterday and forgot to take pictures.

The holes for the screws are the ones in both ends of the hard drive, so it's not using the middle hole on the drive.

No problem :)

I can use these rails in my rack. They are not thick. Great that there are no problems mounting the drive to the caddy.

Many thank you's!

Saarg, how is build going? Any update, suggestions?

Besides the 424 pro I'm also considering the XCase Value 424 but I'm not sure yet :)

It's under testing  ;) In reality, I haven't had time to play with it yet. Too much work away from home.

I did have some problems with the case though.

1.  One bay was not going in/out without a lot of wriggling. Turned out that it was the bump that the locking mechanism used was a tiny bit too high. A round with the hammer fixed it  ;D

2. One of the fans stopped working now and then. Turned out to be a screw loose on the support under the PCB for the hotswap fans. It was used too much force and the plastic just got stuck in the screw threads. Temp fix with a USB cap. Haven't contacted them about it yet.

3. If you have an extended atx board the sidewall bracket for 2.5 inch drives covers all the connectors at the bottom of the board. It's easily fixed by drilling new holes and moving it toward the top of the case. I just removed it, as I have enough space in the bays  :)

4. The holes in the hotswap caddy is a little bit too tight and just a tiny bit off. A little bit of pressure will fix it, but if you're not careful you might enter the screw tilted and destroy the threads if too much force is used.

All in all just minor stuff.

I haven't mounted the rails yet, but they seem sturdy enough.

Thank you for the update! Overall it sounds okay.

Now I'm curious about the XCase pro case. Is in worth the extra money. I have to find someone with such a case... Not sure where to ask...

Succes with your build. If you can find some time pictures would be awesome. :)

Super! Looks like awesome case and you have a beast of a server! What are the specs of your server? What motherboard do you use? I see you have 16? SATA and 2 SAS connections on your motherboard. How long are your SAS cables?

Saarg may thanks for the pictures! [thumbsup]

I couldn't resist the Xeon E5-2670 deals, so I bought four of them.

The motherboard is a Supermicro X9DR7-LN4F and has 8 sata2 and 2 sata3 ports and 8 sas2 ports on the LSI 2308 (flashed to IT mode). I also have one Intel Intel RS2WC080 cross flashed to IT mode. The pcie cards are just for testing right now as this is going to replace my current main server. But have to change my rack and reorganize everything first.

The SAS cables are 0.6m. They barely reach the stupidly placed ports on the Intel card, so be sure to have longer cables if you go for this case and a raid card that have the ports on the top back (back of the case that is).

I was going to use the internal caddy for two SSD's, but since the caddy doesn't fit with such a big motherboard I figured I could use the front bay. I only have about 10-12 drives now to fill it up with.

Do they sell these in the US?

I think the Norco cases are almost identical. At least to some of the ones they sell.
