Cloning a VM

Featured Replies

Hi guys

A quick question on cloning and is it possible in unRAID?

So essentially I'm thinking I'd like to build a Win7Pro VM, install all the updates and any base software I need. This VM would then be the starting point for any other VM's I need to spin up in unRAID. Can I create this VM and then clone it somehow? Even just to copy the VM files somewhere and create a new version of it.

Will this work?

On the other hand, should I create my VM in VirtualBox or VMware Fusion and just import that multiple times (if that can be done)

Thanks

There is no problem in unRAID of cloning a VM by copying the vdisk file (and potentially the XML configuration details as well).  What you cannot do (at the moment anyway ) is have a base vdisk shared by several VM's with the VM's only having the delta details which is a shame as this would reduce the space requirements.

Copying a VM vdisk in from something like VirtualBox is another option - it is really just a variant of copying the vdisk file within unRAID.    However one point that may not be obvious is that KVM on unRAID is quite happy to use .vdi vdisk files created on VirtualBox directly without any conversion.  I use that as the vdisk format for VM's I want to move between the two.  I find the .vdi format gives good performance and occupies less space than a raw disk image.
