First build for under 1000€

Featured Replies

  • Hi, I'm planning on my first unRAID build (and therefore my first ever computer build). I'd like to keep this build under a 1000€ (~ $1120).

At first this will only be used as a NAS with just a few drives but I want some future proofing for more drives (like 6x WD Red + 2x SSD) and running Plex, Crashplan and Blue Iris and a light Windows 10 VM occasionally (no gaming).

    Here are my parts:

    • Motherboard: MSI H97M-E35 microATX (~ 80€)
    • CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4 GHz dual-core (~ 140€)
    • RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY Black 8 GB (~ 40€)
    • Case: Fractal Design NODE 804 microATX (~ 130€)
    • PSU: Corsair CX430M (~ 60€)
    • HDDs: 2x WD Red 3TB (~ 280€) + 1x Seagate 4TB (owned)
    • SSDs (for caching): 2x Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB (~ 120€)
    • USB Stick (for running unRAID): SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB (~ 13€)
    • Some accessories

Total: ~ 950€

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this build, any apparent mistakes etc :D.

Hi -

This post is a little old, but a couple of thoughts if they still help.

That CPU is probably Ok, but could prove a little underpowered if you get into heavy Plex transcoding or heavy VM use.  Similarly, 8GB is probably fine but could be a little light if you get into heavy VM use.  If your plans for lightweight Plex and VM use hold, though, that setup should be fine.

The motherboard looks fine, but many consider Intel LAN chipsets better than Realtek for unRAID.  My Realtek based system works fine, though.

The Corsair CX series don't get great reviews, it is potentially worth upgrading to higher line.  It's also worth considering buying larger SSDs since they only cost a little more.

That's really just nit-picky stuff, though - that looks like a good build.
