Upgraded CPU

Featured Replies

I upgraded my server from a Xeon E3-1225v3 to a Xeon E3-1246v3 and I was wondering if there is anything in unRAID I need to do. The reason for the upgrade is that the E3-1225v3 didn't have HyperThreading. Thanks

Make sure hyperthreading is enabled in your bios. It should be by default.  That's about it.  I have the same cpu btw.

Thanks. Yeah I was a little worried that maybe there was something else I might have missed/overlooked.

Upgrading the CPU I was concerned about the temperatures. I installed the temp monitor in unRAID and now I worry all the time. LOL

What temps do you see on this CPU? Idle its usually 38C but sometimes 42C. Under load (Plex) sometimes it'll hit 72C.

The server is a Lenovo ThinkServer TS140 70A4001LUX.

Hi there, your temps are about normal maybe slightly high but certainly nothing to worry about.

Max TDP on this chip is like 100C before it starts throttling.  You might want to check your case fans or maybe try re-applying your thermal paste.  My 1246v3 usually idles around 30C. with stock cooler but I have my fans at 100%.

<snip> -Taken from another site....

Temps for Xeon E3 with stock cooler.

Ideal temps:

30-40C idle 0-10% load.

40-45C browsing/ streaming 10-30% load

45-55C medium gaming/ video converting 30-60% load

55-65C heavy gaming/ vfx/ video rendering 60-80% load

65-72C super heavy usage 80-100%

Lenovo has something called Intelligent Cooling Engine (ICE) in their BIOS.

3 Settings: (not acturate but close)

Quite mode - Very low acoustic level

Thermal mode - Better thermal while maintaining a low acoustic level

Full speed mode - Fans running at full all the time

Originally it was set to Quite, I have it set to Thermal now.. guess I can try Full speed.

Yeah try all 3 and see how it is.  But your cpu temps are fine really.  If it runs a bit hot it's not going to hurt anything. Your HDD's are more important.  They need to stay cool definitely.

Just tried the full speed setting. LOL.. sounds like an aircraft taking off... it'll burn it self out running that fast. Gonna have to go with the other settings.

When I did thermal compound I did the "pea" ball method. First time doing it that way. I normally do the thin layer over the CPU.

lol, yeah the pea ball or the line method is probably the way to go.  I usually use the line method.
