Parity has errors, now Disk1 shows "device is disabled, contents emulated"

Featured Replies

I recently upgraded from v5 to v6 (6.1.9), during the upgrade I replaced the USB boot device with a new one (if that matters).

Shortly after the upgrade I noticed the parity disk had errors in the SMART report.  I did not have time to address them right away.

I've also been interested in the new Docker features, so I installed CrashPlan, MariaDB, and OwnCloud.  CP is the only one that I am using at this time.

Today, I noticed that Disk1 shows  "device is disabled, contents emulated" and I'm not sure what my next steps should be. Should I replace Parity or Disk1 first to avoid data loss?

Since seeing the error, I have not done anything (reboot, or otherwise) except retrieve the log files.

I do have a drive that is pre-cleared ready to be assigned a function, and another drive not precleared that I can put into the array.  So if I need to replace both drives I can, I just don't know the correct order to do so to avoid data loss.

I had to separate the log files into 5 zip files due to the 192kb limit. the syslog file is 24MB

Thanks for the help in advance.

Hardware info:

I am running on SuperMicro X7SB4, which has ESXi.  Unraid is a VM in ESXi and I am using hardware passthrough to pass through a  AOC-SAT2-MV8 Controller Card

Parity doesn't look very healthy, disk1 dropped offline, try power cycling the server and post a new SMART report, there's no info on the previous one.

I took the array offline and the drive configuration disappeared.  After reboot, same results. (see attached)

Probably damaged super.dat file, do you have a recent flash drive backup? You should also run chkdsk on a windows pc.

Since I just upgraded a few days ago to v6, I don't have a backup of this drive, however I have the flash drive with v5 on it.

Does disk1 appear in the drop down selection?

Have you written anything to the array after disk1 failing?

  • Author

it is not showing up in the drop-down

I have not intentionally written anything to that disk, however I have automated processes that write to Share folders so no way to be sure.  I would assume that since that disk was pretty full and other are not as full, that the other disks would have received any new files.

it is not showing up in the drop-down

Just to make sure, power off, check/replace both disk1 cables and power up again, if the disk still doesn't show up it's dead, in that case you can try a rebuild but since the parity probably has issues it's not ideal.

OK, so I ran a chkdsk on the usb boot disk -- no errors

I re-seated all cables and drives and booted back up the system.  Now, I show Disk1 in the drop-down list, even though all the devices are still unassigned.

-Reassign all disks

-Double check assignments are correct, especially parity

-Before starting array check the box "parity is already valid"

-Start array

-Post new diagnostics

these were your assignments in case you don't know:

            [name] => parity

            [id] => ST3000DM001-1CH166_W1F1NTSV

            [name] => disk1

            [id] => ST3000DM001-1CH166_W1F1NWK5

            [name] => disk2

            [id] => ST2000DL003-9VT166_6YD0ZW9T

            [name] => disk3

            [id] => WDC_WD30EFRX-68EUZN0_WD-WMC4N1491425

Disk1 looks healthy, much better than parity, but before proceeding and since you're not sure if anything was written after disk1 failed, if you can check if all latest data is there.

If yes, I would try to replace the parity first.

I replaced parity, and it seems everything is running smoothly again.  Thanks again for your help!
