April 19, 201610 yr Hi I'm Pretty new to vm's in general and had a question about the setup. my question is about the min and max memory setting on the vm setup/edit page on the web gui. I was wondering how exactly they work and what settings i should be using? I have 16gb of physical ram installed in the system and am running a windows 10 vm that i use as a desktop/gaming computer. I also have a plex server running that is often being used to stream to one other device in my house. Any help/ explination of how the memory settings work and how they affect vm performance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
April 19, 201610 yr Experience has shown that the drivers to support Memory Ballooning tend to make VMs unstable. It is therefore recommended that Min and Max are set to the same value. This means that on starting the VM that memory is immediately allocated (plus a small overhead for running KVM0, and the RAM is not available for any other use until the VM closes down.
April 19, 201610 yr Author So in theory if there was a stable balloning driver i would be able to set a range for the min and max and the system would allocate and unallocate ram as it would see fit but since they are not that stable i should set it to an expected usage from the vm leaving enough for unraid and plex to run smoothly on
