June 10, 201610 yr Currently winging it's way to me is an Asrock Z97 Extreme6 motherboard with 10 x SATA3's (6 off the chipset and 4 off two ASMedia chips). The machine that I'm retiring has a Dell PERC H200 card with break out cables for 8 x SATA3. In the real world, is there any difference with putting my storage array of 6 x 3TB drives on the motherboard rather than on the card? I can see my total number of drives being under 10 so logically it makes sense to use those on the motherboard rather than adding the card which will burn a few watts. While I understand the PCIe card should have more throughput, we're talking spinning hard drives here so surely not much benefit in fitting the card? Not against using the card at all just need the justification!
June 10, 201610 yr Doubtful you'll see any real world differences in throughput. And if anything, the onboard ports are usually faster than an add-on card
